     Once you’ve bought your shiny, new, dream home, you’ll be hit by an absolute avalanche of things to do and decisions to make. If you have a swimming pool and young children - or even grandchildren who come to visit just once a year - then one of your most urgent considerations will relate to pool safety. Even if you do not have kids or grandchildren, but propose letting out your property to friends, relatives and others, then pool safety will again need to be top of your agenda.

The reasons are simple. Each year in Cyprus - as in most countries with a high pool-owning population - children die needlessly in pool accidents. Most tragedies occur because of a moment’s inattention or distraction on the part of the parents, siblings or child-minder. Despite expectations to the contrary, experience shows that drowning is a silent death...and is NOT accompanied by shouting or loud splashing. Within just a minute or two of falling in the water, a young child may be rendered completely lifeless, or irrevocably brain-damaged.

     Many countries have strict legislation in place to protect those children which are most vulnerable (0 - 5 years, but can be older)...and require pool owners to have a recognised safety barrier in place at all times. This may take the form of Safety Fencing, a Safety Net or a Safety Cover. The latter, incidentally, should not be confused with ‘winter’ or ‘thermal’ covers, which of themselves can be a dangerous pool ancillary, invariably trapping underwater anyone unfortunate enough to fall on top of one.

Whilst it is likely that Cyprus will, in time, fall into line with Australia, New Zealand, the USA, France and other European countries and require pool safety barriers to be installed, at present it is very much down to the concerned parent, grandparent or landlord to recognise the potential for danger...and make appropriate provision.
